What is Behavioral Health Training for Law Enforcement?

  • It provides basic information about mental illness, mental health, and specific mental disorders, and their treatment to the officers.
  • It provides training in specific skills that officers may use to encourage de-escalation of mental illness crises.
  • It provides an overview of the local mental health system; what is available, how to access it, and local implementation of the mental health law.
  • It allows officers to get to know key players in the local mental health system: providers, consumers, and family members.
  • It allows officers to understand the experiences of consumers of mental health services.
