Ashtabula County MHRS Board Hosts Stepping Up Meeting to Address Mental Health in the Criminal Justice System

Ashtabula County recently held a Stepping Up meeting, bringing together local leaders, law enforcement, and mental health professionals to address the intersection of mental illness and the criminal justice system. Stepping Up is a national initiative aimed at reducing the number of individuals with mental health conditions in jails by improving access to treatment and support services.

During the meeting, discussions were had about existing diversion programs and explored new strategies to connect individuals with mental health resources before they enter the criminal justice system. Future action planning meetings will work on collaborative efforts focused on expanding crisis intervention training, strengthening reentry programs, and enhancing community-based mental health services.

The Ashtabula County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, along with key partners, remain committed to finding solutions that prioritize treatment over incarceration. By working together, the county aims to create a more effective and compassionate approach to mental health and criminal justice.
